This book presents a series of articles on an approach to change known as Appreciative Inquiry, or AI for short. AI is an approach, which in its brief lifetime has made considerable impact on the field of Organization Development. It provides a critical new way of thinking about organizational change and improvement, yet at the same time is deeply rooted in the historical values of OD. Appreciative Inquiry draws on the best of “what is” and envisioning, and consequently creates what is at the heart of OD, which is perhaps best expressed by Marvin Weisbord as the creation of productive workplaces with dignity, meaning, and community. As the title of this introduction indicates it is very much an award-winning approach to OD. AI has been recognized by many of the OD professional associations, including an Award for Best Organizations Change Program from the American Society for Training and Development, and the Best Paper Award from the Academy of Management. It was part of the change effort that won the outstanding OD Project of the Year Worldwide from the OD Institute and was the topic of one of the articles selected and published as “The Best of the OD Journal in the 20th Century,” and a special issue of the OD Practitioner published by the OD Network.
